Monthly Archives: February 2012

Check out this really funny post that got freshly pressed today. Though I have just started out on the twenties road, I can say that all of these are turning out to be true. Even the terrible #4 where some of my friends are beginning to get married. For #7 I know that I am getting bad at picking up languages or anything for that matter. I don’t know if this is an issue of our time and age, but my attention span has become the size of an anorexic cat.
Whats worse for me is that I often forget that life is just a ride and am still stuck in the vacuum of worrying about term paper submissions. Uggh!

Doctor Quack

When I turned twenty, I was under the impression that life was going to be a party for the next ten years. I was sorely mistaken. You see… I was warned about a couple things: my metabolism will decrease, I’ll get fatter, academic work will get harder, I’ll have to pay taxes; but there are a lot of things no one warned me about.

So I have written this list, projecting my personal experiences onto my fellow twenty-something friends and colleagues who are themselves possibly struggling with the same things I struggle with in this deeply confusing decade we call our twenties.

1. Twenties are the new teens.

People in their thirties often tell me that the thirties are the new twenties, so what does that make us? Well, unfortunately, as if we didn’t already suffer enough in the confusing and disorienting teenage years, we have to do it all…

Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?

Last week in our Surveying Western Art class we learnt about the artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), a contemporary of Vincent van Gogh. Though this Gauguin fellow is highly problematic, politically incorrect, racist and quite a male chauvinist, I love his work and style. His use of colours, ways of seeings and plain cheekiness intrigues me and I guess that is what makes me appreciate him.

Anyway, one painting of his that we saw was titled Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? . Painted in 1897, the painting is an artistic representation of the conflicts and questions that plague Gauguin at that time. As the 19th century was being engulfed by the promise and threat of new discoveries and challenges to beliefs.

Here is the painting –

Paul Gauguin, Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?

And here is a commentary and small catalogue on the painting taken from http://litmed.med.nyu.edu/Annotation?action=view&annid=10412 that gives a great insight into the painting.

Irrespective of whether one grasps what Gauguin is trying to show in this painting or not,  I am really struck by the fact that its has been 115 years now since he asked this question and painted this masterpiece. Yet, after more than a century, in 2012, we are still asking the same existential questions. If anything, we are all the more perplexed by the whirl and enmeshed nature of reality and life around us.

Indeed I ask, Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?

Filed under La vie, Thoughts/ Ideas, Why?

Wish I had read this earlier today. Did many of the “DOs” but also some the “DON’Ts”. Not like it means anything but Happy Valentine’s Day!

Reasonably Ludicrous

A handy list of Do’s an Don’t’s!

DO

Wander around your apartment in your underwear. Or, if you’re feeling ‘ballsy,’ completely naked! Your girlfriend was the one who always wanted you to “put some clothes on, for god’s sake.” You thought that was counterproductive–she was just going to take them off anyway! Well now’s your chance to feel those hard-to-reach spots get caressed by the winds of freedom rather than by someone who demands you come to every single one of her interpretive dance recitals. Enjoy it!

DO

Watch at least 5 episodes of Entourage or any other show that makes relationships look worthless and singleness seem awesome. Don’t you want to be those guys? Well, if you were dating, you couldn’t be.

DON’T

Watch The Notebook or Love, Actually, or anything that’s not about rampant casual sex or a lot of killing. Be careful. In some of those movies…

Does every post have to have a title?

Hello ye folks! Good morning! My plan to wake up at 6.30 am and go for a jog and for a yoga session was a failure , primarily because I snoozed my alarm for 2 hours. I re-started jogging and joined the Yoga kendra here on Friday and now that my abs and thighs are seeing exercise after a long time, every part of my body is in pain, including my hair. Its better than how I felt when I woke up yesterday with a hangover and with my hair smelling of 50 cigarettes. Yuck! But the moustache party was awesome! Great food, great music! Everybody was crazy high and I don’t remember much from what happened post 4 am but I am told I did do some wild funny dancing. 😀

We went for a class trip yesterday evening to the Jama Masjid and Red Fort for the sound and light show. The music was nice but the sound system was really screwed up , so it took away a lot from the sound and light. But the Diwaan-e-aam, Hamaam and other structures of the Red Fort looked glorious bathed in yellow light with the waters of the Yamuna behind it.

Oh guess what?! We wet to Karim’s  in Chandni Chowk after the Red fort. Its a place known for non-vegetarian food. But being a conditioned vegetarian , I have come up with very innovative ways to get away with eating non-vegetarian food sometimes and not feel terrible. So yesterday I had Seekh Kababs and Shammi Kababs. *Drool* They are sooo delicious. Its one of the rare  times I can undertstand why RB likes to have meat for every meal.

Plan for today is to read read read. Have a good day y’all!

Meanwhile enjoy this song that I am in love with right now. CheggitOut!

I actually own and use mufflers now

One of the things I love about Delhi is the winter here. It went down to atleast 2 degrees Celsius and inside JNU the temperature fell even further because of all the trees around. I must say, Delhi has some great options for shopping (though I hate shopping) and it was just fabulous how everybody wore such nice bright-coloured winter clothes in so many designs I have never seen.

Seriously, I’ve never been in such a cold urban place before. In Bombay, winter temperatures go down to only 20 degrees or so.  When the temperature falls to 22, everybody starts using their sweaters (always in black/navy blue/maroon), sweatshirts (black/navy blue/maroon) or shawls (black/ navy blue maroon). Why these colours you ask? Well, that’s because these colours will go with anything one wears and obviously you didn’t expect we would invest on winter clothes, did you? 😐 I actually own a bright orange scarf and yellow gloves now.:D

a winter of orange scarves and yellow gloves

Also check out the view from my room! Yes sir, do imagine how glorious it will be on sunny days. Don’t even get me started on the rainy days I have seen peacocks dancing in the patch of land here.

Another foggy day!>>

By the way I am off for a party in a couple of hours. It a farewell party for one of the exchange students from Germany who was with us last semester. Its going to be pretty insane because a lot of people invited a lot of other people. Alcohol and Music will be the words of the day. Oh! the party is a theme party >> Its a (cue drumroll)…moustache party! Any idea how I can get a cool one? Something innovative would be nice..not the usual marker moustache. any ideas anybody??

Moving to Delhi and other things…

Salut!

Comment cava mes amies? I suppose there isn’t anyone reading this. Nevertheless, I am going to think that I am writing for the sake of my future biographer who will write a book on me because I am going to be such a big shot in life. 😐 😛

Anyway, life altering events happened a few months back! (Aren’t the smallest of things and events in everyday life also life altering in ways we will never know? hmmm)

1. I moved to Delhi.

So I had applied to two places for my Masters. One was CEFL in Hyderabad and the other was JNU in Delhi. I screwed up the CEFL entrance by reaching 20 minutes late for my entrance exam and din’t even finish the paper. The JNU entrance exam asked us random things about art, performance and cinema and it was such a top-of-my-head attempt that I was sure it would be another year of Bombay for me. What with all the hysteria about everyone in the Social sciences wanting to get into JNU.

Well well, so I got into JNU. (cue: mental jig :D) I love my course and the campus is awesome!! I shall be writing more about life here in future posts.

So anyway, Delhi is a huge move. Its got its own quirks and things I hate and things I love. But I am truely enjoying my time here. Its been just 5 months now, but like any other move, Delhi has been an insane learning experience. I just came across this , by the way, >>http://theshootingstar.wordpress.com/2012/01/29/moving-to-delhi-9-steps-to-survival/

2. I have moved to Delhi for good. sort of.

Yes, so I got through JNU and my brother TC got through the institution he had been vying for for his graduation. So Amma is moving to the Gulf with Appa. As a matter of fact, she is leaving from my native place today to catch her flight tomorrow. This was also the primary reason I din’t apply for any Masters in Mumbai. I wanted them to live together. We will not talk about this anymore. I needed this change anyway.Of course I miss Bombay but 20 years in the same place is not good at all for one’s development.  Its scary how I always want change. 😐

When I say I have moved here for good , I mean that I have brought everything I own( except a large carton of books) , including my Scooty Monty , to Delhi. No one in Bombay now except some relatives and friends’ place to crash at. So I don’t know when will be the next time I will eat Jeevan ka Pani Puri.

This sort of breaks my heart and excites me too. I am mostly excited about the future and about life. 🙂

3. I live in hostel now. In the JNU campus. I even have a roommate!

4. KB is seeing/dating/in a relationship with someone else.

He told me this 2 days before my 21st birthday. I cried for 3 hours and haven’t ever since. (Oh no, there was this drunken weepy night 2 months back. But never, besides that.)

She likes him a lot and he likes her a lot. I was upset that he din’t tell me earlier. Everyone knows that I am super chilled out and such a liberal person. He could have just told me right when it sort of started in January and not led me on for so long.

I am done ranting about this. By the way, we are back in talking terms now and sometimes he tells me he likes me too. FuckThatShit.

5. Sachin sir and Geet got married on 4th February this year!! 😀

I used to be part of a dance troupe earlier and Sachin sir was one of the choreographers with Geet as an assistant. So these are among the people who have made me believe in myself and told me that I could dance. They are like surrogate parents to me and always looked out for me ever since I’ve known them.

6. New discoveries!! Lots of travel! New people! Delhi winter. aaah! 😀

Okay I am just adding stuff to make my last howmanyever months seem eventful. It has been eventful actually, but they each deserve a separate post. Soon soon.

Until then, here are glimpses of the different aspects of Delhi.

I haven’t clicked these images but I have been here, yea. Delhi seems like a place with as many disparities as Bombay. The only difference is that these disparities are clearly visible,  established, expressed and impressed upon all the time. To illustrate simply: Everyone travels by local trains in Bombay. Peon to PHD student to MD of the company. In Delhi, there seems to be a very clear divide- auto rickshaw, bus, AC bus, metro train, car, luxury car. Oh well, every city gives us moments to cherish and teaches us things, and I am excited about what this city has in store for me.
